Farmers in eastern Myanmar, displaced by ongoing civil conflict, have increasingly turned to opium cultivation as a means of survival. With limited options and little access to food or income, these communities have resorted to growing poppies, selling raw opium to brokers for minimal profit.

Myanmar has now overtaken Afghanistan as the world's largest producer of opium, with the drug trade flourishing in the absence of effective law enforcement following the military coup. The retreat of the military and police has allowed drug traffickers to operate freely, contributing to a surge in both opium and synthetic drug production. For many farmers, cultivating poppies is a last resort to support their families amid instability.
