As the world's nations strive to agree on a treaty to combat plastic pollution, plastic consumption continues to rise, resulting in the European Union producing about 13.4 million tonnes of CO2 annually from plastics.

Countries are currently negotiating a global treaty aimed at reducing plastic pollution. In Europe, approximately three-quarters of plastic consumption is for non-packaging uses such as construction, furniture, textiles, and consumer electronics. Western Europeans consume about 150 kilograms of plastic per person annually, more than double the global average.

Plastic use in Europe is projected to reach over 100 million tons by 2040. Globally, most plastic products become waste within a year, with only a small fraction recycled. The majority of plastic waste is either dumped in nature or sent to landfills, leading to increased environmental pollution and emissions. Plastic production in the EU also contributes significantly to carbon dioxide emissions.
