Unlike mosquitoes, only female blackflies bite, and their bites are often more painful and less noticeable at first. The increase in blackfly numbers is linked to the abundance of flowing water, which provides ideal conditions for their larvae to develop.

To avoid bites, experts recommend wearing long sleeves, long pants, and using insect repellent. While blackflies can be bothersome, they also play a role in the ecosystem by pollinating flowers and helping to filter water as larvae. Residents are advised to keep doors shut at cottages to prevent blackflies from entering indoor spaces.
