Public displays of female achievement are becoming more visible, such as the women’s national hockey team in Tehran, which practices regularly at the city’s only rink. Players like Adis Khaled describe how hockey offers a sense of freedom, and their success at international tournaments has led to positive recognition, with images of the team displayed publicly. Iranian women were previously banned from attending sports games, and participation in sports remains a significant milestone.

The decision by many women to appear in public without a hijab comes with considerable personal risk. Some women have expressed fear but remain motivated by hopes for a better future for themselves and future generations. Others report making decisions based on the presence of authorities, such as the morality police, and adjusting their behavior accordingly.

Following the death of Masa Amani in police custody after an arrest for an alleged dress code violation, widespread protests erupted across Iran. These were met with a strong response from security forces, resulting in numerous deaths and arrests. Subsequently, legislation was passed to increase penalties for hijab violations, including higher fines and longer prison sentences. Iran’s president, Massoud Pazashkian, has not enforced the new laws, drawing criticism from conservative hardliners.

The Iranian government has implemented technological surveillance to enforce dress codes, including the use of cameras and digital reporting tools. These measures create a heightened environment of monitoring and risk for women who choose not to comply. Despite this, many continue their quiet acts of protest in pursuit of personal freedom.
