Saffron farmers in Pampore, a region known as India's saffron capital, are experiencing severe crop damage caused by porcupines. The rodents, displaced by deforestation and habitat loss, have started feeding on saffron bulbs, leading to the destruction of up to 80% of some farmers' crops. 

Farmers are resorting to traditional methods, such as making fires at burrow entrances, to deter the animals, as porcupines are protected and cannot be harmed. The region's saffron yields have significantly declined over the years, and with fencing being costly, farmers are seeking government support to protect their livelihoods. Over 30,000 families in the area depend on the saffron industry, which now faces an uncertain future.
