A report by Human Rights Watch has raised concerns about the treatment and safety of migrant workers on construction sites in Saudi Arabia, as preparations accelerate for the 2034 FIFA World Cup. The organisation has documented cases of workers suffering fatal accidents, including falls, electrocution, and incidents involving heavy machinery, as well as heat-related illnesses.

The report alleges that many deaths are misclassified as resulting from natural causes, which may prevent families from receiving compensation. Interviews with relatives of 31 deceased workers from Bangladesh, India, and Nepal revealed challenges in repatriating bodies, with some families asked to bear the full cost of returning their loved ones home.

Human Rights Watch is urging Saudi authorities to implement stronger safety protections for the migrant workforce, which is involved in building new stadiums, a rail and transit network, and thousands of hotel rooms ahead of the tournament. Saudi authorities have not yet responded to these claims.

FIFA awarded Saudi Arabia the hosting rights for the 2034 World Cup, drawing international scrutiny regarding the country's human rights record, working conditions for migrant labourers, and the criminalisation of same-sex relationships. Similar concerns were raised during preparations for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where estimates of migrant worker deaths varied widely.
