This weekend may be Mother's Day, but it's the Super Bowl for floral businesses. According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend more than $3 billion on flowers alone.

Floral businesses in the United States are experiencing increased costs due to higher tariffs on imported flowers and floral supplies. According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are projected to spend more than $3 billion on flowers, with the majority of cut flowers and greens being imported from South America. Eighty percent of flowers sold in the country originate from abroad, and last year the U.S. imported $2.2 billion worth of these products.

The imposition of new tariffs has led to higher expenses for small flower shops, which are finding it difficult to maintain profit margins while keeping prices reasonable for consumers. Some small growers, such as Moonshot Farm in New Jersey, are also affected, as they rely on imported bulbs from countries like Italy and Holland. The farm recently received shipments subject to a 10 percent tariff, potentially increasing annual costs by $40,000 to $50,000.

Despite the impact of tariffs, industry experts advise consumers that local florists can still offer a variety of options by making substitutions and working within set budgets. The growing demand for locally produced flowers, especially for weddings, has benefited small domestic growers. However, the effects of tariffs on imported floral products continue to challenge both large and small operators in the industry.
