In the late 1800s, feather fashion was trendy, with some feathers worth more than their weight in gold. The popularity of colorful plumes led to the slaughter of birds, driving some species close to extinction.

Feather fashion in the late 19th century saw the vibrant plumage of various birds, like the flamingo and snowy egret, being used in the hats and accessories of high society women in the United States and Europe. The practice significantly threatened bird populations, drawing them near extinction. In response, the Audubon Society was initially established in Boston by women aiming to raise awareness about the ecological impact of the feather trade.

An 1886 observation in New York revealed that 75% of women wearing hats included feathers from approximately 40 different species, some valued above gold by weight. Feathers, particularly from snowy egrets, were highly coveted, driving plume hunting to be a lucrative, albeit damaging, business. The trade severely impacted bird species, such as the American flamingo and roseate spoonbill, whose numbers dwindled.

The Lacey Act, passed in 1900 by Congress, sought to curb the illegal plume trade, marking the beginnings of U.S. environmental legislation. This act also addressed the interstate transfer of bird plumage. However, the enforcement was initially lacking, with policing of the trade in regions like the Florida Keys being inefficient or non-existent. The tragic death of game warden Guy Bradley in 1902, killed while confronting egret hunters, spurred further protective measures for bird populations.

Legislative actions, including environmental laws and the creation of protected areas like Everglades National Park, helped in recovering many bird populations. Yet today, birds face new challenges, including climate change, sea level rise, habitat loss, and pollution. Advocates like Kelly Cox remain hopeful that collective human action can overcome current issues, much like past efforts halted the destructive plume trade.
