Trinidad used to be the capital of southern Colorado coal. After that went away, bleak times followed. But an art booming is slowly turning things around. Mark Strassmann reports.

Trinidad, a town in southern Colorado with a population of approximately 8,200, was once known for its coal industry. Following the decline of coal, the town experienced significant economic hardship, including high vacancy rates on Main Street. According to local sources, the vacancy rate reached 70% about 15 years ago.

To address these challenges, Trinidad's community focused on developing its art scene. Initiatives such as workshops, galleries, and dedicated artist housing were introduced, contributing to a gradual revitalization of the town. New residents have been drawn to Trinidad to both create and sell art, while local officials and artists highlight the importance of community involvement in the town’s transformation.

The Colorado Creative Districts program, which provides grants, technical assistance, and startup funding for entrepreneurs and non-profits, has played a role in supporting Trinidad and other small towns. According to the program, 30 communities across Colorado have been certified as Creative Districts. Trinidad now positions itself as an emerging arts hub in the region, with a renewed sense of optimism about its economic future.
