Comedian and actor George Wendt, who played Norm on the show "Cheers," died Tuesday at the age of 76. CBS News' Carter Evans looks back at his life and legacy.

George Wendt, the actor best known for his portrayal of Norm Peterson on the television sitcom "Cheers," has died at the age of 76. Wendt began his career in the 1970s with Chicago's Second City Improv Troupe, later achieving widespread recognition for his role on "Cheers." He appeared in all 275 episodes of the series and earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for his performance.

Wendt's initial appearance on "Cheers" was intended to be a brief guest role, but following the cancellation of another show he was working on, he became a regular cast member. In addition to his time on "Cheers," Wendt starred in "The George Wendt Show" and performed in several Broadway productions. He also participated in a "Cheers" cast reunion at the Emmys in 2024.

Following his death, tributes from colleagues and castmates were shared. Ted Danson, John Ratzenberger, and Rhea Perlman all spoke about Wendt's contributions to the show and his character, describing him as talented, kind, and widely liked.
