The UN assesses famine by examining levels of malnutrition and related deaths within a population.

Since March, the flow of aid into Gaza has been blocked, following the end of a ceasefire in the conflict that began when Hamas attacked Israel in October 2023, resulting in about 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages. The blockade has drawn condemnation at the United Nations Security Council, with criticism of the humanitarian impact on civilians.

Palestinian health officials report that 57 children have died from malnutrition since March. Additionally, a UN-backed assessment estimates that another 71,000 children under the age of five could be at risk of acute malnutrition within a year if the situation does not improve. Israel disputes these figures.

To address the crisis, a U.S.-backed plan, supported by Israel, has been proposed to deliver food through a private charity, with the Israeli military overseeing access. However, the UN has expressed concerns, describing this arrangement as the weaponization of aid and stating it would violate principles of impartiality and neutrality in humanitarian assistance. Meanwhile, Israeli military actions are ongoing, with officials stating that attacks will continue until an agreement is reached for the release of all remaining hostages.
