Many summer essentials, including sunglasses, swimsuits, flip-flops, and grills, are sourced from China. Due to tariffs, some major retailers have indicated that customers could see higher prices and fewer options for these items. Resale stores are reportedly experiencing increased activity, and neighbourhood “buy nothing” groups may offer additional savings opportunities.

Costs for summer barbecues are also increasing, with the price of ground beef rising by 11% in the past year and most grills being imported from China. Good Housekeeping suggests stretching protein by preparing kebabs and focusing on more affordable side dishes such as black bean and corn salad.

Travel remains more expensive compared to pre-pandemic times, with prices reportedly 12% higher. Although gas and airfare costs have begun to decrease, alternative travel strategies such as visiting budget-friendly destinations or using home exchange platforms like People Like Us and Home Exchange are seeing increased popularity. Home Exchange notes a 32% increase in membership over the last year.

Movie ticket prices have also risen, with one estimate placing the increase at over 6% compared to the previous year. Some cinemas are offering deals, including discounted tickets on specific days; AMC is providing 50% off tickets on Wednesdays for AMC Stubs members, and Regal Cinemas will offer one-dollar family movies at certain show times. Libraries may also provide access to free or discounted streaming services, movie tickets, and local attraction passes. Patrons are encouraged to check with their local library for available benefits.
