The settlement has drawn criticism from Capitol Police leadership. In a public statement, the Capitol Police chief expressed disappointment, stating that the settlement sends a concerning message to law enforcement personnel, especially those tasked with protective duties.

Former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, who was present during the events at the Capitol, also commented on the settlement. Dunn questioned whether similar consideration has been given to officers injured or killed as a result of the events on January 6, noting a lack of settlements or acknowledgments for those officers or their families.

Dunn pointed out the complexity of the situation, emphasizing the tragedy of Babbitt's death while also highlighting the risks faced by law enforcement officers during the incident. He also raised concerns about the potential implications of the settlement, such as the possibility of other individuals involved in the events seeking legal action or compensation.

The settlement amount reached was significantly less than the $30 million initially sought by Babbitt's family. Details regarding the internal considerations that led to the decision to settle at this amount have not been publicly disclosed.
