The U.S. government's Energy Star program, managed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), is facing potential shutdown due to proposed federal budget cuts. The program is known for its blue-and-white sticker labeling energy-efficient appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines. Energy Star allows companies whose products meet EPA efficiency standards to display its logo, signaling potential energy savings for consumers.

Since its inception over thirty years ago, Energy Star has helped Americans reduce energy consumption by five trillion kilowatt hours, an amount equivalent to powering New York City for a century. The EPA reports that the program saves the average U.S. household about $450 annually. Energy Star has long enjoyed bipartisan support and is regarded as one of the most successful voluntary government initiatives in the United States.

Previous efforts to eliminate the program, including an attempt during former President Donald Trump’s first term, were met with strong opposition from more than a thousand companies. Currently, hundreds of companies, including Samsung and National Grid, have signed letters supporting the continuation of Energy Star. However, it remains uncertain whether the program can be discontinued without new Congressional action.

If Energy Star is eliminated, consumers seeking information on energy-efficient appliances may rely on the Energy Guide program, which provides energy usage data and comparison tools for appliances such as dishwashers, freezers, and water heaters. However, the Energy Guide is not as comprehensive and does not function as a certification program. Alternatively, consumers may consult manufacturer specifications for information on energy standards, though this approach can be more complex.
