Farmers in Syria are hoping the lifting of sanctions will bring much needed relief. Rainfall in the country has been scarce, and fields are parched. There are fears that over 70 percent of wheat crops may fail this year.

Farmers across Syria are facing severe challenges as prolonged drought conditions continue to affect agricultural regions. In areas west of Damascus, essential water sources such as the Ain al-Fajr spring have been significantly depleted, with water flow dropping from about 15 cubic metres per second in previous years to just two cubic metres per second, even with additional pumping. The lack of rainfall has left fields parched and crops struggling throughout the winter months, resulting in little water available for irrigation during the hotter parts of the year.

The United Nations has projected that up to 75 percent of Syria's wheat crops may fail due to these persistent dry conditions. In the northern countryside of Aleppo and other affected regions, the absence of a rainy season has left many crops vulnerable and farmers uncertain about their future. The potential loss of wheat harvest raises concerns of an impending food shortage, with estimates suggesting a gap of 2.7 million tonnes—enough wheat to feed approximately 16.3 million people for a year.

Drought is not a new issue for Syria, which has experienced recurring dry spells over several decades. In previous years, wheat imports from Russia helped to offset domestic shortfalls. However, after the change in Syria's political landscape, Russia reportedly halted these grain shipments. 

There is hope that the lifting of US and European Union sanctions on Syria may ease some of the agricultural strain. The removal of these restrictions could facilitate the entry of foreign food supplies and, in the long term, support the modernisation of Syrian farming practices to better cope with ongoing climate challenges.
