A new report analyzing over 56 million pregnancies has identified potential developmental risks for children born to women with diabetes. The extensive study found an increased incidence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, and other neurocognitive issues among these children. Notably, the risks were observed in cases where mothers had gestational diabetes or type 2 diabetes prior to pregnancy.

CBS News medical contributor Dr. Celine Gounder elaborated on the findings, highlighting the potential dangers of high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. These elevated levels can lead to neurological issues, including spina bifida and complications during childbirth due to larger baby size. The combination of elevated blood sugar, inflammation, and hormonal changes might contribute to turning certain genes on and off during fetal development, thus impacting neurocognitive development.

Given these findings, there is increased focus on whether women should consider being screened for diabetes before conceiving, particularly for those with pre-existing medical conditions. Recent budget cuts to the CDC's Maternal and Child Health Division have raised concerns as they impact the development of guidelines for contraception and pregnancy planning for women with medical complexities.
