The new facility, called the 'Deportation Depot,' will be located at the vacant Baker Correctional Institution near Jacksonville, which has been closed since 2021 due to staffing shortages. The site is close to Lake City Gateway Airport, which is expected to facilitate deportation flights. 

The announcement follows a federal judge's order to temporarily halt construction of the state's first detention center, known as 'Alligator Alcatraz,' in South Florida over environmental concerns. DeSantis stated that the additional capacity is needed to support federal immigration enforcement and expects the new center to be operational within weeks, with a capacity to hold approximately 1,300 detainees.
