The Christian community in Deir el-Zor, eastern Syria, has been severely diminished following fourteen years of civil war, with all five of the city's churches either heavily damaged or destroyed. Local leaders, such as George Constantine, are working to restore their faith's presence and revive religious sites, including the once-prominent Church of Christ the King.

Elsewhere in Syria, violence against Christians continues, as seen in a recent suicide bombing at the Mar Elias Church in Damascus that killed at least 25 worshippers. The Christian population in Syria has dropped from around 10% of the pre-war population to only a few hundred thousand, mainly due to emigration.
