CNBC's Steve Liesman joins 'Squawk Box' with the latest results of the CNBC/NRF Retail Monitor showing consumer spending was up in April.

Consumer spending increased in April, according to the latest CNBC/NRF Retail Monitor. The monitor, which uses real credit card spending data from Affinity Solutions, reported a 0.07% month-on-month rise in consumer sales excluding autos and gas. When restaurants were also excluded, the core figure was up 0.09% month-on-month. On an annual basis, headline spending was up 6.8%, with core spending rising by 7.1%.

This marks the second consecutive month of strong sales, following two months of negative growth earlier in the year. The increase in spending occurred despite separate reports indicating downbeat consumer sentiment regarding the economy. The National Retail Federation (NRF) noted that consumers have maintained their ability to spend, even amid uncertainties such as potential tariff changes and possible supply chain disruptions.

Growth was observed in several categories, including electronics and appliances, building and garden supplies (both up 2.8%), health and personal care (up 1.4%), clothing (up 1.1%), and furniture and home (up 0.9%). Restaurants and bars, on the other hand, were among the few sectors to see a slight decline.

Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell also referenced credit card data indicating continued strong consumer spending. Economic indicators such as low unemployment and rising incomes above the inflation rate were highlighted as contributing factors, though consumer sentiment remains low. Analysts note that some recent spending may be attributed to consumers making purchases ahead of potential price increases, suggesting that future spending patterns may fluctuate as these factors play out.
