The settlement includes $200 million to be paid over three years and $21 million to resolve claims of civil rights violations against Jewish employees following the Hamas attack on Israel.

The Trump administration cited Columbia's failure to address anti-Semitism during the Israel-Hamas conflict as the reason for the funding cuts. Columbia was among the first universities targeted in the administration's efforts to address pro-Palestinian campus protests. While President Trump accused the university of permitting harassment of Jewish students, protest leaders and some Jewish students stated that their demonstrations were directed at the Israeli government and the war in Gaza, not at Jewish individuals.
