A recent study has found that the rate of greenhouse gas emissions is causing global temperatures to rise more quickly than earlier projections suggested. According to researchers, Earth is on course to surpass the 1.5 degrees Celsius warming threshold above pre-industrial levels within three years, making it increasingly unlikely that the Paris Agreement's target can be met.

The study highlights that only 130 billion metric tonnes of CO2 can be released before the 1.5°C limit is breached, a threshold expected to be reached by early 2028. Scientists warn that exceeding this limit will heighten the risks of extreme weather events, ecosystem damage, and severe impacts on vulnerable populations, including the threat of rising sea levels to small island nations.
