Authorities are now investigating whether more could have been done to prevent the attack. The Premier defended the police response, noting that two officers were critically injured while confronting the attacker. A veteran detective ultimately killed the gunman, ending the ambush. The community has since gathered to mourn the victims, including a 10-year-old girl, and the Sydney Opera House was illuminated with a menorah as a gesture of solidarity.
