The new proposal, which would be privately financed, includes plans for carbon capture but also weakens some climate commitments, such as exemptions to B.C.'s oil tanker ban. Indigenous leaders emphasize that legal requirements now compel the government to seek their support, and the federal government has stated that consultation with B.C. and coastal First Nations is mandatory before any new pipeline can proceed. Alberta is expected to present its plan to Ottawa for review by July 1st.
