Seventeen migrants lost their lives when an inflatable boat capsized south of Crete, according to Greek authorities. The incident occurred 36 nautical miles off the coast of Ierapetra and was discovered by a Turkish merchant vessel. 

Two Egyptian men were rescued by the Coast Guard and taken to hospital with hypothermia, starvation, and dehydration. Greece remains a major entry point into the European Union for migrants, with a recent increase in arrivals from Libya to Crete. The origin of the boat involved in this incident has not yet been determined.
