This is attributed to Alberta's swift rollout of licensed retail stores and the imposition of a 16.8% additional provincial tax, the highest in Canada.

Industry experts and producers note that while the province's tax regime boosts government revenue, it also creates barriers for cannabis businesses, making it harder to profit and grow. The additional tax revenue is used by the Alberta government for health care, infrastructure, and other community services.
