After only a year of living in the house, a tornado destroyed the three-story building in a matter of minutes. The home was among approximately 5,000 buildings damaged during a series of deadly spring storms that swept through the U.S. Midwest and Ohio River Valley.

The storms resulted in at least 25 deaths across Missouri and Kentucky, according to local officials. Uma Hollinshead described returning to her street after the storm, initially mistaking her neighbor’s intact home for her own, only to find her house had been flattened. 

Among the wreckage, the family was able to recover a few personal items, including an urn containing ashes of Uma Hollinshead’s late sister and a keepsake from her uncle’s military service. However, many other sentimental possessions, such as heirloom quilts, were lost in the destruction. Hollinshead expressed the profound impact of the loss, noting the emotional and financial investment the family had made in the home and the uncertainty about their next steps.
