Linwood Riddick, a 79-year-old retired shop owner from Summerville, South Carolina, recently completed a six-year journey to earn a bachelor's degree in music industry from South Carolina State University. Inspired by the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre, where three unarmed Black students were killed by police during a civil rights protest, Riddick decided to enroll at the historically Black university as a tribute to the victims.

Riddick began his studies in 2019 with no prior college credits, commuting daily to campus. He dedicated his graduation to the memory of those lost in the massacre, stating his achievement was in their name. University President Alexander Conyers noted that Riddick's determination and symbolic gesture have had a meaningful impact on the university and its community, serving as a reminder of the importance of remembering past sacrifices.
