The first victim identified was 70-year-old Jutta Hinrichs, a retired occupational therapist from Calgary. Three other people were taken to hospital, and officials described the event as extremely rare, unpredictable, and unpreventable. 

The search and recovery operation was hazardous due to unstable debris, and the affected area remains closed as officials assess its safety. Experts note that rockfalls in mountainous regions are not uncommon, but the scale of this event was exceptional, possibly linked to glacial retreat. Authorities are considering improved monitoring and technology to help prevent similar incidents in the future.
