AccuWeather Long-Range Expert Joe Lundberg looks ahead to next week's forecast for the U.S. From the northern Plains to the Northeast, wintry cold and storms are expected to impact these regions.

Meteorologists are forecasting an active pattern of winter storms and cold temperatures across the north-central and northeastern United States from December 5th through the 10th. A significant storm is expected to impact the mid-Atlantic and Northeast during the weekend of December 6th and 7th, with snow possible in cities such as Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, and Buffalo, while rain may affect the I-95 corridor.

Additional systems are expected to bring further snow and cold to the region, with the potential for increased snow cover intensifying nighttime cold. Meanwhile, Southern California may see a chance of rain, which could be the last for the foreseeable future. Meteorologists are tracking at least three separate storms during this period, with the possibility of more to follow.

Wintry cold and storms from Midwest to Northeast

When we have long-range weather forecast questions, we turn to the crystal ball, Joe Lumberg. And Joe, we've got a loaded pattern across most of the north-central, northeastern U.S. We really do. It's just an active storm pattern, if you will, going forward. Part of the three things to know, not just next week, really I want to focus on late next week, is the period from December 5th through the 10th, so we're talking really the end of next week through the beginning of the following week, cold is going to dominate from the northern plains to the northeast. There'll be a series of storms that'll come through the pattern. I think the biggest one that could affect the mid-Atlantic and northeast is probably going to be next weekend, the 6th and 7th, it may get underway on Friday night, the 5th. And then there may be an opportunity for some rain to return to Southern California. But those are the big-ticket items that we're looking at for the pattern for that period from December 5th through 10th. In fact, here is the big picture, if you will. You'll notice the big dip in the jet stream here over the eastern half of the country to the south and west of it, generally warm and dry for the southern Rockies and for much of south and west Texas, but cold is going to dominate from the Dakotas to Minnesota all the way to Maine and to Boston, and you're going to see a series of systems coming through this flow. And as they do, they're going to tap into this cold air and there's going to be an opportunity for snow. In fact, we're going to put a lot of snow on the ground here, I think, over the next couple of weeks. All right, it's like we're dealing with a big refrigeration process here as we establish more and more snow cover, which can influence the way it feels, kind of sometimes independent of the upper-level atmosphere configuration for short periods of time. Seriously, I mean, if you get an area of high pressure to come down over the snowpack on any given night with clear skies and light winds with these cold air masses, you could have some really, really cold nights that are hard to moderate during the daylight hours. So keep that in mind for this period. Now as we go toward next weekend, one of these disturbances coming through the flow may try to work with really a northern branch feature and develop an area of low pressure coming through the Carolinas and working its way up the eastern seaboard. With all the cold air in place here, snow I think is on the table again for Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, Buffalo, even into parts of the interior northeast. Probably rain for the I-95 corridor, but even there it's questionable, so something we're going to be keeping an eye on again for that period, December 6th and 7th. On the other side of the coast, on the west coast, you're going to be looking at an upper-level trough of low pressure trying to back away from the main jet stream flow. The question is going to be, does it bring moisture into southern California and an opportunity for rain, or is it really much to do about nothing? I think it will trend a little bit cooler as that works its way through and then it warms up once again. And that may be the last opportunity for rain for southern California for the foreseeable future. Alright, so a lot of our viewers here in the Midwest, the Northeast, we've got three separate storms in view. We've got the weekend storm, we've got the Tuesday northeast storm, and then another one that you're tracking for next week. Joe, lots going on. And there's probably two more after that, I think.
