A struggling industry receives yet another lifeline. Nearly 4 million taxpayer dollars will be going to South Australian wine exporters over the next two years as industry players struggle to bounce back. In the context of global oversupply, changing consumer preference, geopolitical tensions, shipping disruption and just uncertainty, it's a tough time at the moment. Exports to China spiked to more than 1 billion dollars last year when hefty tariffs were lifted but for the rest of the world they're declining. I have one winemaker that's got 165 million litres of wine in his tanks and he does not have a home for it. The money will fund a global wine growth program but the details on what exactly the program will do are still unclear. They've announced the funding today with little to no consultation with the industry. The South Australian Wine Industry Association, we have set up an export committee. They want to have it as a collaborative process where we work together and co-design initiatives. Wine is a 2.5 billion dollar export industry for Australia, more than two-thirds coming from SA but critics say more focus should be given to the state's seafood industry currently being crippled by the algal bloom. The algal bloom of course impacts fishes profoundly but these are two very specifically different focuses. It's a kick in the face for the primary sector at the moment. Rebecca Wilson, 10 News.
