Wildfires have ravaged over 10,000 hectares of forest and small villages in Syria's coastal Latakia province. Emergency officials describe the situation as catastrophic, with firefighting efforts hampered by strong winds, high temperatures, and drought conditions. 

Civil defence teams are working to prevent the flames from reaching the Al-Furnluk Natural Reserve and nearby residential areas. The Syrian government has deployed significant resources, including 80 teams and 160 fire trucks, with additional support from Turkish and Jordanian crews. Experts attribute the intensity of the fires to climate change, noting similar challenges across the Mediterranean region.

These crackling flames have destroyed an area roughly around the size of the European cities of Paris or Barcelona. Firefighters have been battling some of the worst wildfires in years in Syria's western Latakia region. A joint field operations room is coordinating firefighting and evacuation efforts. But the fires that started four days ago are still raging. New and fierce fire spots have just started burning in the Kastel Maaf area in the Latakia countryside. Our teams are still inside, working to contain the newly started fires as the wind is picking up and making the fire spread further. Those winds, combined with high temperatures and drought-like conditions, have made the flames nearly impossible to contain. Civil defence teams and emergency crews are trying to stop the fire from reaching the Al-Furnluk Natural Reserve, a large network of interconnected forests. The fierce wind that just blew caused the fire to grow and extend to houses of civilians in the area. Our teams in the Syrian civil defence are trying to contain the fires and not let them reach the residential area. That's an unexploded bomb going off. Military ordnance is slittered across many parts of Syria after years of civil war. But the country's neighbours are helping, with Turkish firefighting teams helping battle the flames, and more help has arrived from Jordan. The Syrian government calls the situation extremely tragic and says it's deployed 80 teams, including 160 fire trucks, to divide the blaze into areas that should be easier to contain. The fires have destroyed more than 10,000 hectares of small villages and forests. Experts blame climate change on the ferocity and scale of the fires because fires in the Mediterranean region are common during summers. This year, Turkey, Greece and Syria are all struggling and suffering from a perfect storm of soaring temperatures and strong winds. The Syrian government says it's doing all it can and is hopeful that it will be able to contain the flames before they spread even further.
