Greyhound Racing NSW has been offered $10 million in compensation over four years, which the industry considers insufficient for establishing a new metropolitan track. The closure comes as the industry faces stricter governance and animal welfare regulations following a government report, with some advocates renewing calls for a complete ban on greyhound racing.

So come September 2027 when the current lease is up, the complex will be converted into sporting fields and public green space, unlocking other benefits too. This particular place has so much potential to deliver the housing that we desperately need. Around 2,500 more homes on top of the almost 5,000 already planned or approved in the area, including at the old fish market site, with Mervac successfully reeling in that project. But Greyhound Racing NSW has also been thrown a bone. The poultry $10 million offering that they've given us over a four year period is nowhere near enough compensation for this sport to develop a new metropolitan racing precinct that we can be proud of. Losing this track isn't the only hurdle the industry faces, with tougher governance and animal welfare rules being imposed on Greyhound Racing right across NSW. It's all part of the government's response to a 722 page report addressing widespread concerns within the industry. It has a lot of very good recommendations to ensure the survival and the thrivability of Greyhound Racing. But for others, including Animal Justice MP Emma Hurst, the report has reignited calls to ban it altogether. A dog fight the Baird government lost in 2016 and one the Minns government is hesitant to take up. I don't want to have that dog running, so to speak.
