The United States has warned of "severe consequences" should South Africa not take action after briefly detaining "two U.S. officials", who were providing support to the Afrikaner minority group according to Washington, on Tuesday.

Tensions between the United States and South Africa have escalated following Washington's condemnation of the reported arrest of two American officials in South Africa. The US government claims the officials were in the country to assist the Afrikaner minority and warned of severe consequences if the matter is not addressed.

South Africa, however, denied arresting any US officials and clarified that seven Kenyan citizens were detained for illegally processing US immigration applications. The incident has further strained diplomatic relations between the two countries.

On the contrary, Washington has condemned South Africa's arrest of two American officials on Tuesday, who, according to the US government, were in South Africa to provide assistance to the Afrikaner minority. The United States warned of severe consequences should South Africa not take action. This can only be seen as an attempt to intimidate US government personnel in South Africa on official business. The United States will not tolerate such behaviour toward its government's officials, read part of the statement. South Africa denied having arrested any US officials, saying on Wednesday that it had proceeded to arrest seven Kenyan citizens who were illegally working to process immigration applications for the US government.
