Cafe manager Oleksiy Melnychenko held out as long as he could in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson. But amid regular Russian artillery and air attacks, he's decided to pack up shop, a testament to how dangerous daily life remains.

The Proster cafe in Kherson, Ukraine, has been forced to close after escalating Russian shelling and drone attacks made it too dangerous to continue operations. The cafe, which had served as a safe space for locals since 2019, was managed by Alexei Malnichenko, who has now decided to relocate to western Ukraine for safety.

Kherson has experienced a sharp increase in attacks since September, with much of the population fleeing the city. The population has dropped from nearly 300,000 before the war to around 60,000, as frequent bombings and drone strikes have rendered daily life increasingly perilous.

Alexei Malnichenko has kept serving coffee at this cafe in the Ukrainian city of Kursan so residents could get a small taste of normal life, despite the constant threat of Russian artillery and airstrikes. But in recent weeks, the cafe manager says the danger has grown too severe to continue. I can say the first two years after we returned were bearable. There were some attacks. A mine hit near the coffee shop, shattering all the windows on the front. There was constant shelling, drones, everything. However, from September, shelling became constant, and drones were always flying. The cafe is called Proster, which means space in Ukrainian, and has served as a safe space for locals who have endured persistent violence in recent years. It first opened in 2019, but Malnichenko has decided to pack up and move to safety in western Ukraine. Moscow's forces have regularly attacked Kursan since fleeing in November 2022. But in recent months, attacks have mounted, rendering its streets increasingly deadly in broad daylight. The city is under frequent fire from devastating glide bombs and roaming FPV drones sent by Russians dug in across the Dnipro River. These are bomb fragments that I found on my way to work, Malnichenko says. The 38-year-old is not the only one who has decided to leave. Much of Kursan has emptied out, with its population dwindling from nearly 300,000 before the war to around 60,000 today. Those who have stayed behind yearn for the days before the war. This resident says the cafe is, quote, a reminder of the peaceful days we once had. Malnichenko and his girlfriend are moving to the western city of Ivano-Frankivsk, where the cafe's owners opened a sister location in 2022. But he hasn't given up hope of returning home. It's sad how ruined it's become, because we all know that it will be rebuilt. And that's when we'll be able to make Kursan better.
