A significant cold wave is impacting the Great Lakes, Midwest, and Northeast regions of the United States, with 153 million people experiencing below-average temperatures. Morning lows in the northern plains and upper Midwest are in the teens and 20s, and clipper systems are bringing both snow and reinforcing cold air, particularly in the Midwest.

As the new work and school week begins, the number of people affected by below-average temperatures is expected to rise to 195 million. Residents are advised to dress in layers and protect children and pets from the dangerous cold, with cities like Minneapolis facing below-zero wind chills and single-digit highs.

And we are in the deep freeze in the Great Lakes, even down toward the southeast. 153 million of us are below average. Some warmer temperatures across the western side of the country, but even tomorrow, we still have the cold beating out the warm air, and you can see why. It's like a reinforcing shot of cold air, and that comes in for the second half of the weekend across the Midwest. Northeast, not as bad as the Midwest, I will say, but still, it's cold outside. You definitely need the jackets if you're doing skating around Rockefeller Center here in New York City. 195 million, still below average as we start off the new work week and school week. Speaking of school, make sure the kids are well-prepared at the bus stop and don't leave the animals out, because this is dangerous cold. I mean, look at Minneapolis.
