This decision aims to support U.S. EV manufacturers and other industries critical to the nation's economic and environmental goals, as articulated by President Joe Biden. 

Biden has expressed a clear vision for the future of electric vehicles in the United States, emphasizing that they should be produced domestically by union workers. This policy marks a shift from previous stance, challenging the policies of his predecessor, Donald Trump, whom Biden had criticized for similar tariffs. However, the administration believes these tariffs are crucial to preventing the U.S. market from being dominated by Chinese products and to securing jobs for American workers in key industries. 

This decision is also seen through the lens of election politics, with Biden appealing to auto workers and manufacturers in critical swing states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania. The involvement of Canadian EV builders and the possible impact on the Canada-U.S. relationship further complicate the scenario. Canadian Prime Minister has responded by positioning Canada as a strong ally ready to step in to meet manufacturing demands, though it is still unclear if Canada will impose similar measures on Chinese products. 

Industry experts are cautioning about the potential ripple effects of these tariffs, particularly in relation to the economic ties between Canada and the United States. While some see an opportunity for Canada to become more competitive in the U.S. market, others warn of the risks to bilateral relations should Canada choose a different path with regard to Chinese imports.

As much as this is about policy it's also election politics as Biden tries to appeal to auto workers and manufacturers in critical swing states. Especially geared to the Midwestern states, Michigan, Pennsylvania that the must-have states for Biden. Canadian EV builders could also see a tariff ripple effect. There's some benefit to what what the Americans have done here is if they're going to hold out our major competition Canadian exports into the U.S. market are going to be much more favorable. The prime minister is trying to position Canada as an ally ready to fill any manufacturing gaps as he unveiled another new EV supply chain plant. So we are being very very strong with a solid offense on creating the resiliency and the support that the world's economy is going to need from a reliable friendly partner like Canada. The prime minister did not say whether Canada will impose similar tariffs on China. Industry experts warn he could risk hurting the Canada-U.S. relationship if he doesn't follow suit.
