U.S. pharmacies plagued with ADHD medication shortage

It's really sort of a supply and demand issue that you often hear about with these types of medications. So there was a major manufacturer of these stimulants that had some production delays, manufacturing delays, and then on top of that there were several companies, especially those that make the generic forms of these stimulants, who just didn't meet their production quotas that the federal government allows them to, sets for them, that the DEA sets for them. So they just sort of failed to meet those, you know, those limits that were set for them, and then that kind of, you know, triggered this situation where we had, you know, a real shortage. The FDA saying, you know, in 2022 there were about a billion doses of these stimulants that went unmade and unshipped to pharmacies, and they're expecting, you know, it about to be about the same this year, so a real sort of backlog in production and getting these out to people who need this medication. Back in the day, people just thought kids or really even adults were either just hyper or they were unfocused, but there's been a lot of awareness about ADHD. So you think that so many more people have gotten diagnosed that that's leading to this problem of the shortage as well? Well, that was the demand part that I mentioned, you know, in the supply and demand issue. Demand has never been higher for these stimulants, and I think one real reason is that during the pandemic, a lot of adults started realizing that they were having trouble with paying attention, with staying on task, with functioning day to day, and started, you know, sort of looking into, you know, could I have the adult form of ADHD, which, of course, you can have. And at the same time, psychiatrists were forced to sort of go online with their practices. So they were treating patients virtually. They were prescribing stimulants in some cases to patients they believe had ADHD virtually without physically seeing the patient. So we did see a real significant rise in the diagnosis of this attention disorder and, you know, also in the number of scripts that have been written for people, you know, for this medication, which can be enormously helpful to somebody who has ADHD.

The United Nations Security Council has authorized the deployment of a multi-national security force to Haiti. It's designed to help the Haitian police battle heavily armed gangs that have become increasingly powerful there. It's not clear when the force will arrive, or who, other than Kenya, will contribute to it.
