Tornadoes have wreaked havoc in America's Midwest, causing a building to collapse with dozens of people inside and destroying and damaging hundreds of homes, many around Omaha, Nebraska.

A series of powerful tornadoes have swept through the Midwest of the United States, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. The storms, which occurred recently, resulted in a building collapsing with dozens of people inside, and inflicted substantial damage on hundreds of homes, with many affected in the Omaha, Nebraska area.

According to reports, the tornado outbreak generated nearly 100 tornado warnings, marking it as the most active tornado event of the year so far. In Omaha, Nebraska, specifically in the Elkhorn neighborhood, residents have been returning to their properties to assess the damages. Some homes were reported as completely destroyed by the force of the storms. Despite the widespread destruction, there have been no fatalities reported, a fact that officials find both surprising and relieving given the extent of the damage witnessed.

In a remarkable account of swift reaction, one family in the path of an oncoming storm managed to escape unharmed by taking immediate action. "I ran downstairs and gathered up everybody. We jumped in the truck, and I drove that way as fast as I could away from it," a resident recounted. This story highlights the quick decisions made in moments of crisis.

Emergency services, including police and firefighters, have been conducting door-to-door visits in the aftermath, offering aid and ensuring the well-being of residents. Additionally, a significant tornado was noted to have touched down in Shelby, Iowa, on the same night, causing extensive damage but, fortunately, without resulting in serious injuries or deaths.

As the cleanup efforts commence, the region faces further challenges with tornado watches remaining in effect for at least four additional states, indicating that the worst may not yet be over for those in the affected areas.

Residents in Omaha coming back to their homes Saturday morning, trying to figure out where to even begin, with some homes completely leveled by the storms. The Elkhorn neighborhood of Omaha, one of the hardest hit. This family was hiding in their basement before they saw a massive storm cell heading their way and jumped into action. I ran downstairs and gathered up everybody. We jumped in the truck, and I drove that way as fast as I could away from it. Police and firefighters going door to door, helping people and checking to make sure everyone's OK. Amazingly, despite the level of devastation that we're seeing, no reports of any fatalities. Officials here both surprised and relieved that's the case. Once you see devastation like this, you start thinking there's going to be some deaths. We're not seeing it, and that alone is a miracle. And take a look at this, another massive wedge tornado that touched down Friday night in Shelby, Iowa. This cell tracked a long way, leaving behind a lot of damage. But again, thankfully, no reports of anyone seriously injured or killed. And unfortunately, the worst is not over just yet. Tornado watches are still in effect for at least four states tonight.
