The U.S. gross domestic product accelerated to a 4.9% annualized rate, more than double the second-quarter pace, topping estimates. Personal spending also grew 4%. Jobless claims rose to 210,000.

We got GDP out of the U.S. showing the economy growing the fastest in two years last quarter. Bloomberg's Michael McKee joining us now with more, Mike. I have to tell you, the reaction in markets was really surprising to me. I expected a pop in yields. I expected to have some sort of bullishness borne through in the idea of what does this mean for longer-term inflation? Exactly the opposite. Well, it may be that what Alessio is saying is not the way the market's taking it, that the market is thinking we may see some weaker growth going forward. A lot of people don't think we can sustain this. 4.9% for the third quarter, led by personal consumption up 4%. Now, can Americans keep spending at that rate? Most economists don't seem to think so, although Winnie makes a good point. We do get PCE numbers tomorrow on spending. Here's the real disappointment, though. Business investment down 0.1%. It was up 7.4% the prior quarter, so businesses dropped out. Do they come back? These are questions that are going to consume people going forward trying to figure out what happens in the fourth quarter. Other numbers today that we talked about, jobless claims up 210,000, still not sending us any signal. Trade balance a little bit deeper, but it does suggest something that came off of GDP a little bit. Durable goods orders, are we seeing a rebound? 4.7% on the headline, 0.6% on the core sort of capital goods orders. And then here, I want to go one more time, Lisa, into this idea of what happened with business spending. If you take a look at the Ecan function on Bloomberg, which is a terrific economic model, it shows you the last three quarters and what we have seen. Yellow is the color of business investment, and look at the change. You can see blue, that's what consumer spending is, and obviously it got bigger. But that yellow line is almost non-existent. What happened to business spending and does it rebound? And do we get some kind of revision going forward that shows it higher?
