A garbage truck collecting rubbish on Geoffrey Ave in Greystanes, NSW, began rolling down a hill without a driver and crashed into a family home after striking a parked car. Three people were inside the house at the time, but no injuries occurred as the baby’s bedroom, which took the brunt of the impact, was unoccupied.

Engineers have assessed the home and found significant structural damage. The family’s insurance policy had expired, leaving them financially vulnerable, and a neighbour has started a GoFundMe campaign to support them during the holiday season. The garbage truck company, United Resource Management, was contacted for comment.

Rolling down the street without a driver, the garbage truck had pulled over to collect rubbish from a home on Geoffrey Ave when it started tearing down the hill. It took out a parked car. You can see the workers running to try and stop it, but it mounted the kerb and crashed right into the front of this Greystanes home. First thing I thought it's going to hit the fence, it's going to hit the house and kill my daughter-in-law and my grandchild, whose bedroom's taken the fall here. You don't think something like that would pretty much happen to you, like you see things happen on the news all the time and whatnot, but when it happens to you personally, you're just a bit shocked. Three people were inside at the time. Just grateful that everybody's okay. The truck ending up here crashed into the front room of the home. That's the bedroom to a baby who is about to turn one. Luckily for the family, there was no one inside that room at the time. Engineers sent to inspect the home say there's significant structural damage. Insurance policy ran out and he's just working his butt off to make ends meet and pay the bills and this is what happens. Their neighbour has started a GoFundMe to support the family during what can be a difficult time of the year. They're such a hardworking family, now they're not going to spend Christmas in their family home and it's upsetting to know that. The garbage truck company, United Resource Management, was contacted for comment. Mikaela Fanto, 10 News.
