This year’s United Nations General Assembly gets underway in New York on Monday, with world leaders meeting in a bid to salvage ambitious sustainable development goals adopted in 2015, from drastically reducing poverty to ending gender inequality, that are in most cases well behind schedule.

That was the overall objective set by countries in 2015, with 17 goals, including ending extreme poverty, ensuring every child gets a quality education and protecting the planet. And all of these by 2030. As world leaders meet for the UN summit, the hardest part remains to be done. Because only 15% of set targets to achieve the 17 goals are on track. Many are going in the wrong direction. It's abysmal. It's a sobering fact that we will come into in the General Assembly. Huge implications for everyone. And it is a failure of ours to tackle global inequalities, our triple planetary crisis. Over the last few years, progress has been set back by the Covid-19 pandemic, wars, worsening climate catastrophes and sharp increases in the cost of living. Over 700 million people live in extreme poverty today. And far from eradicating it, at the current rate, 575 million people will still be extremely poor in 2030. 84 million children still won't be going to primary school. And it will take 286 years to reach equality between men and women. We're a way out of this mess, as he put it. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said it isn't just governments that need to step up, but scientists, businesses and figures across civil society. Seven years. That's how long the UN has left to reach its sustainable development targets.
