Both Ukraine and Russia have deployed AI-augmented drones, raising ethical concerns due to the lack of binding international standards on their use. While Ukraine has installed these systems in thousands of drones, officials emphasize that the final decision to strike remains with human operators.

As drone technology evolved rapidly through the nearly four years since Russia invaded Ukraine, artificial intelligence has become a critical tool, according to Ukrainian soldiers. An AI-assisted targeting system helps this drone pilot strike what appeared to be a Russian tank from more than 12 miles away. Without the additional guidance from AI, there's absolutely no way he could have hit it, says the pilot with the call sign MEX, from Ukraine's 58th Motorized Brigade. Reuters could not independently verify the drone footage. Both Russia and Ukraine produce several million drones a year, leading to the commonplace use of signal jamming devices to cut the connection between aerial vehicle and their pilots. That's where the AI comes in. MEX explains that after he sets the drone's target, its built-in processor and camera will track it down. Even if he loses connection with the drone, it doesn't matter, MEX says, because it will fly completely on its own to that point. He also says the AI is trained in a way to recognize targets such as vehicles, and is able to accurately adjust the pinpoint set by the pilot between one and two miles away to hit around the fuel tank of a car. Industry figures say the software often still needs improvement, and its performance depends on battlefield conditions. The technology, which has also been deployed by Russia, has raised ethical concerns. However, binding standards on the use of AI-augmented weapons are still virtually non-existent. Ukraine has rolled out dozens of such systems, installed in thousands of drones. But it has said any decision to strike must be made by a human, and not AI.
