Judge Leonie Flannery described the attack as shocking and unprovoked, noting the profound impact on the victim. Gordon's defense cited his youth, post-traumatic stress disorder, and drug-induced psychosis, which the judge acknowledged. With parole, Gordon could be released next year.

His defence lawyer argued he was young, suffering from PTS after being bashed at work and in the grip of drug addiction, which had turned his normal personality into a devil.
