Auto workers in the U.S. continue to strike against General Motors Co., Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis NV as their union pushes for a dramatic reset of the wage scales and working conditions.

UAW members continue strike against GM, Ford, Stellantis

How far apart are the two sides? They still remain very far apart. Over the weekend, Stellantis increased the raise offer to 21%, GM and Ford have both offered a 20% raise. But the union is asking for a 36% raise. So there is a very wide gulf between them. So does that mean this may be quite an elongated situation? Do we have any idea of how long the strikes could last? Yeah, it is hard to know, of course. But we've talked to some analysts who say they could go through the end of October. It kind of depends on how quickly they can bridge this very wide divide. So what are the risks to each side as this continues? So if the union doesn't succeed here, they could sort of set back their efforts to organize the non-union auto factories in the United States owned by foreign manufacturers and owned by Tesla. That's their big goal, to expand their membership by organising those factories. If the union succeeds, the company's labour costs could go so high that they won't be competitive with Tesla and the foreign auto manufacturers. So there are risks for both sides. Have we heard from President Biden? This is obviously key to him at this point. Oh, you bet. Yeah, he spoke after the strike started on Friday and he encouraged the companies to reward workers for the record profits they've enjoyed. He squarely took the side of the UAW in this dispute. He has called himself the most pro-labour president ever. And Michigan, where many of these workers are at, is in a very important swing state that he won in 2020, but currently leads by just one percentage point over Donald Trump. And all of this, of course, comes at a time when we're seeing this costly shift towards electric vehicles. What comes next, depending on the outcome of these labour negotiations? Right. Between the three of them, GM, Ford and Stellantis, they're spending more than $100 billion to develop and build electric vehicles. This is the biggest transition the industry has seen since its founding. So they're saying they can't afford rich contracts and this EV transition. For the union, the next step is to ratchet up this strike. They've only struck three plants so far, one at each company. They still can strike their big pickup truck plants, which is where the automakers make most of their money.
