Oakland experienced two separate school shootings in one week, resulting in the death of renowned coach John Beam at Laney College and the non-fatal shooting of a student at Skyline High School. Police have arrested suspects in both incidents, which authorities confirm are not related.

Community members and officials gathered at a previously scheduled gun buyback event to honor Beam's legacy and discuss strategies to reduce gun violence. Residents expressed concern over the rising violence and emphasized the need for more youth opportunities and positive role models in Oakland.

to now attend Oakland residents reacting to two school shootings in one week while they mourn the loss of a legendary coach who was a victim in one of those shootings. I have no words because it's just after shootings, after shootings, after shootings. Good evening on this Saturday night. I'm Christina Rendon. It has been a violent week in Oakland. There were shootings on two school campuses, one of them leading to the death of legendary coach John Beam. Today officials and community members are talking about Beam's legacy and also public safety in Oakland. KTVU's Aaron Dickens joins us in studio with more. Aaron. And there was a gun buyback event in Oakland today. Officials say it was already scheduled, but many discussed Beam's legacy and the effort to get guns off the streets. Our thoughts and prayers, of course, and our condolences and love go out to his family, his friend, our entire city. Coach Beam was loved and knew everyone in Oakland. Mayor Barbara Lee speaking about coach Beam at a gun buyback event in Oakland. It was organized by the Oakland Police Department and Mount Zion Baptist Church. I was told that this morning the first gun was an AK-47, a weapon of war. And so there are many, many areas that we have to address and ways to address gun violence. This is one of them. There have been two school shootings in Oakland this week. On Wednesday, a student was shot at Skyline High School and survived. Then on Thursday, coach Beam was shot at Laney College. He died on Friday. Police have arrested suspects they say were involved in each of the shootings. And here at Laney, there is a memorial for Beam. It has been here since Thursday, and there are several signs. This one says, thank you, coach, a true Oakland Titan. He played a major role in this community in Oakland, and everybody loved him. Linda Adams-Rackley was at the memorial. She says Beam coached many of her family members. Making sure that they stayed on the right track, made sure that they did all the right things, you know, and they all made sure that they all went to college, and they did. Linda says there is a lot more work to be done in Oakland when it comes to public safety, especially after a week of violence. Are you concerned about gun violence? Oh yes, most definitely. I live in Oakland, grew up here, and gun violence has just gotten out of control. Linda also says there needs to be more opportunities for kids in the community. Less guns on the streets, you know, they need to get something for these youth, for the younger people to do, because all they do is turn to guns, and that's not the answer. And Linda says the community needs more people who inspire youth in a positive way, just like Coach Beam did. And please tell us the two school shootings this week, they are not related. Christina?
