The government and foreign delegations are much more interested in assault rifles and pistols because they provide coverage and are much more important for border surveillance and protection of the land. Jihadist insurgents have blocked fuel imports into Mali since September, creating a shortage that is damaging the economy. Speaking at the exhibition, the junta's defense minister accused external powers of supporting the terrorism that has plagued the country for the past 15 years. We have learned to better defend our interests, to be less dependent on those who want to impose their will on us, and to work with those who are willing to respect us. This is what guides strategic cooperation between Mali and Turkey. Following a 2021 military coup, Mali expelled French forces and turned to military partners like Russia and Turkey. Bamako relies on Ankara for equipment like drones, which it uses against both armed separatists and Islamist insurgents.
