Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan set off for Germany Friday on a short visit overshadowed by the two countries' very different stances on the war between Israel and Hamas.

Germany's Olaf Scholz hosts Turkey's president at a time when the two leaders stand in total opposition on Israel. On Tuesday, speaking alongside his Greek counterpart, Chancellor Scholz slammed President Erdogan for what he called his absurd claims. And that's why the accusations made against Israel are absurd. That was in response to comments made by the Turkish president, who accused Israel of fascism. On Wednesday, in front of his party's MPs, Erdogan went even further. I say it openly and with a clear conscience, Israel is a terrorist state. His accusations have touched a raw nerve. Unlike the EU and the US, President Erdogan doesn't consider Hamas a terrorist organisation, but thinks instead to call them resistance fighters. Turkey has, in the past, hosted leaders of Hamas on its territory. Despite being criticised for going ahead with the visit, the German government says it's important to maintain a dialogue. It's very important at times like these to keep talking to those who have a different perspective on what's happening in the Middle East. Against the backdrop of Israel's war on Hamas, there's little hope that anything concrete will come out of the visit. But analysts say both leaders could make headway on renegotiating the 2016 migrant deal. Spearheaded by Angela Merkel, the deal gave Ankara financial incentives to stop migrants from reaching the EU.
