Trump has suggested invoking a 1798 federal law to expel without trial individuals suspected of drug trafficking or criminal gang involvement.

The proposed crackdown includes deporting thousands of individuals who are legally in the U.S. under temporary protected status. This measure aims to affect various groups, such as Haitian residents of Springfield, Ohio, whom Trump has controversially accused of inappropriate actions. The proposed policies could face significant legal challenges, as they are extensive yet lack specific details on implementation.

Economists have raised concerns about the potential negative impacts of mass deportations on industries reliant on migrant labor. Such industries include agriculture, food processing, construction, and home health care for the elderly and disabled. It would mean communities losing valued community members who have oftentimes lived in the United States for a long time. Trump would end the so-called catch-and-release policy under which asylum seekers fleeing violence or persecution in their home countries are allowed to stay in the U.S. pending their immigration court hearings. Trump plans to hire thousands more border agents and redirect military funding to border security. He says undocumented migrants are criminals and psychotics. These are seriously sick people, and no, I don't want them in our country. Trump wants the death penalty for undocumented aliens convicted of killing U.S. citizens, and would invoke a 1798 federal law to expel without trial suspected drug traffickers or alleged members of criminal gangs. Trump has said he would remove tens of thousands of immigrants who are in the U.S. legally under temporary protected status. Like the Haitian residents of Springfield, Ohio, he has accused of eating household pets. Though Trump's plans are sweeping, they are light on details of how they would be implemented, and most would almost certainly be challenged in court.
