Washington's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is due to visit Russia mid-week as the United States pressure Moscow to agree to a ceasefire. Donald Trump's deadline is set for this Friday. He wants the Kremlin to agree to work towards ending the war or else the US president says he'll impose new sanctions on Russia. Witkoff's message will be to the Russians, is there anything they can do to avoid sanctions at this point? You've got to get a deal where people stop getting killed. They're wily characters and they're pretty good at avoiding sanctions so we'll see what happens. Witkoff has met Russian President Vladimir Putin multiple times. On Monday the Kremlin said another meeting was possible and it considered talks with Witkoff to be important, substantial and helpful.

Multiple media outlets in Israel have reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants a complete military takeover of Gaza, while almost 600 former Israeli military and security officials are petitioning Washington to stop the fighting.
