A federal trial has gotten underway for David DePape, the man accused of breaking into the San Francisco home of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband Paul Pelosi in the head with a hammer.

Trial begins of alleged Paul Pelosi attacker

The federal trial is underway in San Francisco for a man accused in the attack on Paul Pelosi, the husband of Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. David Dupap is accused of breaking into their San Francisco home and using a hammer to attack Mr. Pelosi. In opening statements, prosecutors described Dupap saying he wanted to kidnap the former speaker, telling Paul Pelosi, you will take the punishment instead. The jury also saw a video of the assault from a police body-worn camera. The defense says Dupap had no intention of harming Paul Pelosi and was motivated by a belief that he was saving children from harm, based on podcasts and YouTube videos.
